Dec 18, 2020 I have machined parts from aluminum material 7075 T651 AMS QQ-A 250/12, ASTM B209 that had a clear anodize finish applied per Mil-A-8625 [link is to free spec spec at Defense Logistics Agency, dla.mil] type 2 class 1. My customer is rejecting the parts because the finish is not clear.
Oct 25, 2011 The root cause is the high amount of zinc in the 7075 alloy. The degree of blistering, or whether it even occurs or not, can certainly vary from batch to batch of metal. Since the zinc may not be perfectly evenly distributed throughout the metal substrate (due to differences in migration rate of the alloying elements during heat treat) some ...

Feb 03, 2010 Some 6000 meters [8700 psi] is quit a squeeze and maybe compacting the T-6 Aluminum 7075 hard anodized tubes to a point where the hard anodized compresses along with the aluminum tube, lets say, "By quit a bit" whatever that means and when relieved of pressure and allowed to expand, the tube expands and the hard anodized coating stays put.
Jun 11, 2015 We do mainly stainless parts in our CNC lathe, but have been doing some 7075 and other 7000 series alloy lately, and those parts are getting sent out for hardcoat black anodising. On some of these parts we are getting problems with white spotting, blistering, or the ano flaking off in spots. With 6061 we don't have any issues.
May 24, 2007 We are black anodizing .0002 MIN thick in accordance with MIL-STD-171, 7.2.2; which is your typical sulfuric acid anodic film per MIL-A-8625, Type II, Class 2 (dyed), black. Oct 11, 2011 I have a little project that requires some hard coat anodizing on some 7075 aluminum, with some small pockets and other small features not anodized. Parts are .750 Ø, 1" long, and the holes are .031" Ø. Other small features are machined lips.
Aluminum Alloys and their Effects on Anodizing Color. Aluminum alloys can also have an effect on anodizing. Remember, that alloying elements such as copper do not anodize, so high-copper alloys such as 7075 or 2024 will give noticeably different colors than lower copper alloys such as 6061, both with dyed parts and with clear anodizing.
Jul 26, 2013 Alloy 7075 can react to the anodizing process in a unique way that other aluminum alloys do not. Sometimes the parts will exhibit blistering, which is initiated during the anodizing process. The following is part of an answer I wrote in this column in the November 2011 issue of Products Finishing, pertaining to blistering on 7075:

The natural color of Type III depends on the aluminum alloy (Al 6061 is a dark pungent greenish, and Al 7075 is sort of a green to bronze). Color also depends on the temperature and the power level — lower temperature and higher power levels make the color darker — it also makes the anodize harder. WickWerks rings are made of Aluminum 7075.
