Thread forming vs tapping in aluminum. The Hobby

2014-4-4  Mar 20, 2014. Messages. 25. Mar 28, 2014. #1. I was talking to a fellow that has a fair amount of experience and most of what I am doing is with aluminum and plastics. He told me for smaller stuff in aluminum from say 4-8mm thread forming is a better way to thread. I have done some looking and find some indication he may be on the right track.

Cutting Taps Or Forming Taps On Aluminum: Which Tap,

2021-1-31  When tapping smaller threads, roll forming taps are very productive. These taps can be more costly, application specific, and require a different size drill vs. cut taps, as the same 10-32 thread requires a different size drill from a roll forming tap and a cut tap. Roll forming taps also perform the best when the tap is centered and parallel ...

2015-4-13  The second is really good threading lubricant. We used sulfonated cutting oil, CimCool synthetic water mix coolant and soluble oil coolant. All worked OK. We used them on turret lathes, radial drills, CNC machining centers and regular tapping machines. You could easily use a thread forming tap on a drill press with a reverse or with a tapping head.

Don't Cut Threads — Form ‘Em

2021-11-16  Thread forming is useful for both blind and through holes, and can produce threads of any length. But because thread forming produces no chips, it is especially well suited to tapping blind holes. Thread forming can also eliminate the need for special taps to produce threads interrupted by longitudinal slots or cross-holes.
