Barrel Finishing Barrel finishing is a low-cost method of smoothing sharp edges, imparting a matte finish, and preparing surfaces for anodizing, painting, or plating. Many small aluminum stampings, cast- ings, and machined parts are cleaned, deburred, and burnished by barrel finishing. In most in-
Mar 13, 2021 Is Bead Blast finish possible on aluminum February 3, 2010. Q. I am reading a specification for a bead blast finish on an aluminum channel. Can this be achieved? Can it be applied to an extrusion or does it need to be applied to a sheet and then formed into a channel after finishing? Joe Bandy product designer - Waynesboro,Virginia ^
Choosing the Right Finish for Your Aluminum Extrusion Profile. Aluminum is a remarkable material. Its unique combination of properties makes it suitable for many different applications. When exposed to air aluminum instantly forms a natural, thin, and transparent oxide film on the metal's surface. This film provides a corrosion resistant barrier.
Techmetals Specifications. Below is a list of specifications that are most often provided by Techmetals. We also offer metal plating solutions to additional specifications such as AMS, MIL, ASTM, SAE and Customer Specifications. Techmetals also offers RD, Optical Coatings, Medical Coatings, Large ID OD Grinding Areas with 20-Ton Capacities.
Because anodizing is a conversion coating, and relies on the aluminum substrate being converted to aluminum oxide, any defects in the aluminum will have marked effects on the quality of the anodizing. The basic rule to remember is that the aluminum finish must be consistent, clean and fully exposed for the anodic layer to form properly ...

What is Alodine ®?Also known as chem film or chemfilm, Alodine ® is a chromate conversion coating that protects aluminum and other metals from corrosion. Related products include Iridite ®, TCP-HF, and Bonderite ®.. Chromate conversion coatings are a type of chemical conversion coating. In chemical conversion coatings, the metal undergoes a chemical reaction at the surface.
The standard as-machined surface roughness is 3.2 μm (125 μin). A finishing cutting pass can be applied to reduce the roughness of a surface down to 1.6, 0.8 or 0.4 μm (63, 32 or 16 μin). This will increase the cost of producing a part, as extra machining steps and tighter quality control are required.

Anodizing is a simple electrochemical process developed 100 years ago that forms a protective coating of aluminum oxide on the surface of the aluminum. The lifetime of the finish is proportional to the thickness of the anodic coating applied. Aluminum oxide is a hard, durable, weather-resistant substance that protects the base metal.

Extruded aluminum profiles are cleaned, etched to a desired finish and deoxidized prior to anodizing. In the anodizing step, the thickness of the aluminum oxide is closely controlled to comply with the AAMA 611 specification. After anodizing, many colors can be obtained. Sealing completes the process of developing this true metallic finish.
The anodizing of aluminum is a popular process that improves the metal's durability, resistance to corrosion and scratching. Techmetals has over 50 years experience in titanium and aluminum anodize, assisting a variety of industries like the medical, aerospace and automotive fields for instance. In addition to the reasons above, aluminum anodizing also offers some aesthetic benefits.
