I would not even think about any aluminum plate under 1/4" thick. (If you play on rocks) Look at rockhard 4x4. They make both steel and aluminum, one of the few that do.

I am sure its not hard to take off(5 bolts for the main skid plate and 4 for the rear I think), but before I start dismantling my vehicle piece by piece to make it better for the beach I should start asking questions.

Owner of aluminum 3/16” primitive skid plates here. I have abused mine for years and they're still in great shape. Sure there's a few minor gouges from bashing rocks hard, but I foresee no situation where I would prefer steel. The weight and durability of aluminum is excellent and they're not going to rust.

Aug 10, 2009 straight aluminum would be 7075. cheaper would be 6061 and plates with 1/8" steel or thicker "plastic" of sorts. I'm doing a belly skid out of 3/16" AR235 steel. it is harder than your typical 1026 and it should fit the bill for a skid perfectly.

It is on the underside so it's more prone to salt and road grime potentially accelerating any galvanic corrosion between the skid plates and the frame. I know steel will rust, but is there less concern for the mounting locations to rust away with all steel skids?
May 31, 2021 Aluminum's density is about 1/3 that of steel and the advantage of the increased material thickness to offset strength actually makes aluminum more dent resistant over steel skid plates of the same weight. Aluminum is extremely corrosion resistant and will not rust even if the surface coating becomes gouged or scratched.
Jul 14, 2021 I believe the fenders are aluminum and the whellwells are aluminum and plastic. Aluminum will corrode, but pretty slowly and it doesn't "rust"! Only the floor and frame, bumper and maybe skid plates are steel, from what I can gather.

The two main reasons I went aluminum over steel were weight and rust. The skid plates I took off my JK before trading it in had huge sections of of powder coated steel flaking off where moisture was allowed to sit.

Steel slides on rocks better than aluminum skid plates. Aluminum is more expensive than steel skid plates. Dec 15, 2017 Here in northern Ohio, rust is the enemy, so if aluminum is a feasible option for any aftermarket bits and pieces, that's my first choice.
