Jan 05, 2011 Torsion bar material: aluminum vs steel? 01-05-2011, 01:48 PM. Hi, I was thinking about adding a rear anti-sway bar to one of my cars and rolling my own since it is a very simple design (H-beam rear suspension so its merely a straight bar that connects both sides). ...
Jan 05, 2011 With the H-Beam rear suspension, any additional torsion bars are usually bolted to the twist or cross-beam to stiffen it and resist twist. They are bolted to the - section of the H. It makes for a very simple modification as no bending is needed. The add-on torsion bar is simply a straight bar which has bolt holes on each end. John

Ive heard that some teams use titanium or a titanium/maraging steel mix. Has anyone here heard of this material: 5S99G? I cant find a reference to this material in any ASTM charts, however my ASTM lists are pretty old and this is apparently a newer material.
10Dec 23, 2009 20 Nov 09 15:17. Am I right in saying that MT1010 is a common choice for manufacturing the above? This is a pretty general question of course I know, but the torsion bar is to be of the solid bar type and act as a supplement to the original rear torsion beam already in place. Thanks. Brian.

Cost and price are always an essential factor to consider when making any product. The price of steel and aluminum is continually fluctuating based on global supply and demand, fuel costs and the price and availability of iron and bauxite ore; however steel is generally cheaper (per pound) than aluminum (see galvanized vs stainless for more info on steel).
We can see that the plastic range of aluminum is considerably less than steel (around 11,000 psi plastic range for aluminum, or roughly 24% of the materials ultimate strength). 2) Since an aluminum structure is designed to a deflection criteria, all scantlings are made somewhere around 50% or so larger than they would be for a steel structure.

this includes torsion bars, coil springs, and the shorter drive shafts. Experience has shown that it is not always possible to efficiently replace a torsion member made of steel or aluminum with one designed from fibrous composite materials and meet both strength and stiffness requirements while at the same time staying within the same envelope ...
Dec 01, 2015 Youngs Modulus for steel (29 million PSI) is three times that of aluminum (10 million PSI). This means that for a fixed geometry, a part made out of steel will be three times as stiff as if it were made out of aluminum. In other words, an aluminum part under load will deflect three times as much as a similarly loaded steel part.

Other materials exhibit stress-strain curves considerably different from carbon-steel although still highly nonlinear. Nov 18, 2021 This value is useful in torsional applications (shafts, bars etc.), where twisting can cause this kind of shearing stress on a material. The shear strength of 6061 aluminum alloy is 207 MPa (30000 psi), and these values are summarized in Table 1.
Mar 05, 2013 Say you had a 1/2 solid steel rod vs a 1/2 OD pipe, the solid steel rod will be much stronger in general. However, it would also be much heavier. If one used the same material, one might be able to make a 1 pipe that would be a little springier than the original solid rod, and also generally resisting bending better.
