Sep 24, 2009 While I am stating the obvious, a shorter barrel weighs less. Regarding the aluminum barrels - yes they save you weight, but you give up accuracy and durability. Not worth it in my opinion. BTW - I own both brands I recomend. I have a Shaw on my 10-22 and a fluted GM on my 77-22. Good luck what ever you decide to do.

Then I have a CZ-455 bolt action with a regular tapered barrel that will do 0.2 groups (of 5) at 50 yrds, and did 0.12 group on its best group.

Jun 30, 2018 Some barrels do need a bit of support. I would still remove the barrel band since it causes unnecessary stress or flexing in most cases. Remember that the reciever is aluminum and cant support weight or torque as well as steel. This is particularly important to consider if replacing the original barrel with a heavier or bull barrel.
